node: pre[c]edent study: shelter:bus/bus:shelter

For the first half of this week in a two day charette, we focused on the "pre[c]edent" part of our on going "shelter:bus / bus:shelter" project. We were to do a complete study of the actual standing bus shelter in from the the Graham building on campus, learn from our findings, and design a new bus shelter to be placed in a different location- outside the Weatherspoon Art Museum across the street from the United Methodist church. We worked in our "symbol groups" of 4 to produce a visual presentation of our precedent study, sketch models, and a final model of our design. Here are some photos from my group's process and result.

A drawing I did for our powerpoint presentation- the orthographic views of the currently standing bus shelter.

My group's collective sketch models for our design.

Our final design.

We felt that "intersection" was the best idea for our design. The location is at the very edge of campus, intersecting on and off campus, we pulled elements from both the "landmarks" on either side of the street, intersecting shapes, and finally intersecting of people, places, and experiences through the city bus system. We pulled an abstract shape from the two landmarks so as to relate our design to it's surroundings, and intersected two of the same shape bus different materials. We chose wood to tie in the large and prominent trees around it, and glass as a constrast to further emphasize intersection. We considered shelter, seating, visibility, and human interaction in coming up with this design.

More charettes to come!
