styrene modeling : process



Our final for 565 is due soon- a styrene product model. I designed a chair (which you can see in the sketches above.) Below are a few pictures from the process so far-- I'll be posting more of the finished product very soon! (Thank you Heather for the silly one of me in action!)

A little about the process- we first cut the sheets (my design required a quarter inch thick styrene) into the size we need, then build "jigs" or forms out of MDF. We then heat the styrene with a very hot heat gun (as you can see in the photos above- the temperature I needed was 500°F, as my pieces were so thick) and mold them around our forms. After this part, I sanded all the pieces and will assemble them with a plastic glue, and spray paint white for the finish.
